Statement

Proverbs 31 praises the “valiant” woman for her skills in spinning, weaving, and textile production and for her management of her home to benefit her family. Attired in garments of “fine linen and purple, she is clothed with strength and dignity” and is treasured above pearls and rubies by her husband. This proverb celebrates a traditional, centuries-old role for women. Women today enjoy a broader range of participation in society and are active beyond their own homes and families.

This “Mantle of the Valiant Woman” recognizes the historical and the contemporary roles of women. The fabric is hand woven in plain weave of silk, linen, cotton, and rayon yarns in purples, blues, and magenta. Portions of the fabric were cut and pieced in traditional quilting patterns, but with a contemporary arrangement and color selection. The garment itself employs an ages-old Japanese kimono form that includes a decorative element on the back panel. The pieced designs are embellished with glass and ceramic beads. The lining is hand-painted silk.
