Statement

When I first started thinking about this project, I knew I wanted my mantle to be knit all in lace, something totally feminine. I Enjoy Being a Girl by Oscar Hammerstein II stuck in my mind as a theme, but really for the title itself, rather than the entire content of the song. Though there are some great lines that pertained to my project quite nicely, most of the song is caught up in the idea that a woman’s self-esteem is totally reliant on her looks. In the forty years since this song was written. I hope things have changed a little.

I flip when a fellow sends me flowers.
I droll over dresses made of lace.
I talk on the telephone for hours
With a pound and a half of cream upon my face.
When I have a brand new hairdo
With my eyelashes all in curl,
I float as the clouds on air do.
I enjoy being a girl.
