Statement

I titled my piece “New Beginnings” because taking the class with Anita and creating the mantle is a new beginning for me. Anita gave me the inspiration to create my own garments and make my own artistic statement. It was the beginning of a creative journey into artistic expression, making new friends, learning new techniques of embellishing and designing fabric.

The techniques I used are stamping and stenciling. The motifs are from Native American petro glyphs, which are some of the oldest visual images symbolic of man’s response to nature. The swirl is a universal symbol for the cycle of life; the lizard and frog spirits that help man to find his way and the frieze is a border of stylized mountains and water found on old pottery. The use of these deigns symbolizes some of the journeys I took this year.
