The masks I saw on a trip to West Africa were my inspiration for this project. During the process of creating this mask I had many new experiences and memories about my trip.

Some of the materials I used were yarns, Brillo pads, and a lot of ephemera. The hair was crocheted in narrow strips using unusual yarns, manipulated by heating plastic to give it an iridescent quality. I attached the pieces with wires by weaving them through the yarn. The armature for the head was woven with basketry fibers.
As I worked, I became more connected to the mask and the trip returned more vividly to me in my mind.
