Statement

First of all, I’m a mask maker. I’ve made many woven masks through the years. For this project, I was working on a mask based on my Scandinavian heritage – but I stopped when almost done. I needed “rebooting.” This usually happens in summer time for me while watching a sunrise, sunset, etc. We tend to be five steps ahead of ourselves – planning tomorrow and the next day – but what about today? I remember a Steve Jobs speech in which he said that upon waking up in the morning he’d ask himself if this were the last day of his life, would he want to do what he had planned for that day? If the answer was “no” and that went on for too many days when he asked himself that question, then he’d have to rethink his priorities. I will finish my Scandinavian mask someday. But I’ve chosen to present this older mask instead. Her “wires” look like they’re “regrouping,” her face has somewhat faded, but on the “inside,” she’s still very bright and rich. I want to remember to let these qualities show through. I know we all can’t just totally change our lives, and some of us wouldn’t want to, but there may be small changes we make that may lead to big changes.
