Statement
This year I turned 61, and decided that it was time to stop hiding my age behind chemicals and lengthy salon appointments. I grew tired of the lost time, the lost money and the constant obsession about my roots. A dear friend told me that when women go gray … they become invisible. That was the challenge that I needed. Last June, I stopped dyeing my hair. Meanwhile, I have loved the process of creating this mask. I have treasured the failures, the successes, and the wonderful feedback from this group of creative women. In the end, I chose to use my own hand dyed, over dyed and marbled fabrics to create my mask. The colors are vivid, representing the joy and energy that I try to put out to the world. I used crystals and beads for sparkle and “star quality.” And then there is the hair… I asked a variety of people from different parts of my life to donate one yard of any gray fiber. More than fifty friends, family and extended family responded with such special gifts. As a result, my mask’s hair is magnificent. It is her crowning glory. Women who have joy, energy, friends, and family in their lives will never become invisible! |
