Statement
I journeyed with the mask concept from a plaster cast of my own face to the multi-layered, colorfully stitched final creation. I explored the notion of “mask” as shield, adornment, costume, entertainment, protection, spiritual conveyance and more. There are layers of transparency as well as opacity hinting at things that are revealed and concealed. This mask is a signpost of my journey. Its multiple layers suggest the many faces and personas I sometimes wear as daughter, parent, grandmother, sister, aunt, coach, spouse, friend, mentor, artist, athlete, traveler and explorer. Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and transitions, also the god of gates, doorways, and passages looks to the past and the future…as do I. |
