Statement
“A mind is like an umbrella; I was inspired to create an umbrella representing both the closed and open mind. The darker side, the inside of the umbrella, out of the sun, out of the light, out of the beautiful natural elements, a symbol of protection from one’s fears, one’s anger, one’s hate. People can hide behind negative thoughts, impressions and intolerances essentially because of a closed and fearful mind. The outside in the light, with the sun shining upon it, represents the open mind. Brilliant in beautiful shades of joy, peace and love, the figures embody the acts of compassion, understanding and cooperation. Humanity is always at the crossroads of choosing to understand and react to circumstances with the love of the open mind. As a Nuno felter, the challenge was to felt two sides of each of the eight umbrella sections at the same time. I also wanted to use some lettering in a somewhat graffiti style, which is something different from my usual soft, nature inspired designs on my felted creations. Having recently spent some time in Mexico, the heart charms are reminiscent of Milagros, which supplicate for the open mind embracing love. May we all strive for a more loving world by daily embodying the positive attitudes and actions of peace, compassion, understanding, patience and hope. Love is the Answer. All You Need is Love. |
