Statement
Sometimes, just when you need it, some money comes your way. Through golden parachute pennies from heaven, or my own hard work, I have always had an abundant life. For my umbrella, I wanted to somehow combine the Japanese braiding technique of Kumihimo with bobbin lace. As I worked up the handle and center tube of the umbrella, and over onto the modified lace pillow, the metal wire had a mind of its own, so I continued using only Kumihimo techniques. To strengthen the Kumihomo structure, I used multiple layers of resin painted onto the fibers. For each layer, I needed to wait a minimum of 24 hours before adding something else, and painting another coat. My idea of using an ancient technique in a new way has been rewarding and satisfying. |
