Statement

The soul is of eternity
it dwells in human form
then moves beyond
but never, ever ceases…
And like a butterfly
emerging from its dark cocoon
each soul attains its wings
as it releases. (Author unknown)

In this piece you see the life cycle of a butterfly from eggs to caterpillar to chrysalis and finally to a butterfly on a flowering milkweed plant.

The material used is 16/2 cotton with extra handwork done in finishing to simulate the colors of a Monarch butterfly. The hand-woven technique used is called Bronson lace pickup. A cartoon was first drawn to use as a guide for the images to be picked up.

Because of the openness of the lace weave it is most effective if placed where light can pass through it.
