Statement
Through my journey in fiber my work has revolved around home and family. With family as the core of all I do, I am often thinking about how best to teach, interact and care for them. My grandmother would say “There is a feather for your hat, now wear it!” The feathers that I have made for my hat are the virtues that I think are important to my home and life. Hopefully I will live these virtues. My hat was inspired by the 1930’s fascinator hats. I covered the buckrum base in dupioni silk. The words on the hat and the feathers are embroidered in cotton floss. I knit the “feathers” on size 1 needles in a free form pattern, and crocheted with a size 0 hook to form the lace. Each “feather” is of a different design. The “feathers” are starched and stabilized with florist wire then attached to the base and lining applied. |
