Statement

During the Footwear project, I thought of different types of footwear. Would mine be artistic historical or character footwear? I could not decide.

One day, a friend sent me an e-mail; the most beautiful e-mail of the year. It inspired me to create shoes for people who can't obtain any. If we are to continue as a global society we cannot overlook those who are denied basic human rights. We must know this fact and share their pain.

I got the idea for these plastic bottle sandals from inventive people in third world countries who use cast-off bottles to make protective footwear. I wanted to "walk in their shoes." Each night I went to a nearby running track and walked several laps in these sandals. They are displayed on dirt from the track.

It is my hope that these sandals may inspire each of us to think about those less fortunate than ourselves.
