Statement
When thinking about footwear in my life, the first thing that came to mind was a type of shoe I never wore. When I was in grammar school in the 1950ís I watched my older sister and her friends go to prom wearing see-thru plastic mules. When I saw them in their crinoline dresses and glamorous shoes, I longed for the day when I would be old enough to wear that type of shoe. I loved the glitz and romanticism that these shoes symbolized to me. Eight years later when I was going to proms, the style had long been replaced by another shoe fashion trend. In the 1970's disco decade glitzy and transparent mules returned with some modifications. I thought they were just as cool as 20 years before. They were worn with sequined and shorter dresses. The mirror ball made the dance floor surreal and the mules looked like they would be even more fun to wear. By then I was happily raising my children: chauffeuring, consoling, and nurturing all around. Dancing was not something my husband and I did very often. We did manage to take some disco lessons, but never really got to the mirror ball dance floor. I never wore my fantasy shoes, but still have many memories of this glamorous style. I can still hear the music playing! |
