Statement

My shoe is a combination of the two techniques I have been working with for the past few years: metal work and book binding. I challenged myself to make a metal sandal that has a hollow heel with a door that opens to reveal an accordion book. As I etched, pierced, forged, soldered, drilled, filed, sanded and riveted the metal sandal, I had time to think about the content of the book. I decided to write an ABCdarian. Each of the 26 pages would have one word for each letter of the alphabet. Each word represents something that I believe in. For the book, I painted hand made paper and attached the words with sparkly thread. Finally I attached a leather strap to the sandal with an ornament on top--an open book with a quote from Karen Moning: "It's What You Choose To Believe That Makes You The Person You Are."
