The “Umbrellas Open to Ideas” project idea took me back over forty years to a memory from early in my teaching career.
All of the 2nd grade classes were to perform in an assembly. One of the teachers was the musician, and chose the song, “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head,” which was written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach in 1969 for the movie, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and topped the music charts in 1970. The students learned a simple dance routine and sang the song while holding umbrellas.

My task was to find umbrellas for eighty students. My search brought me to the honeycomb folded umbrellas in pink, blue, and white, used for baby and wedding shower decorations. The honeycomb style umbrella wasn’t applicable to this project. But, the song title did provide inspiration for this work.

This umbrella made of organza and tulle is beaded with teardrop and round glass beads. The head is covered with fake fur and curly ribbon embellished with crystal teardrops and beads.
