Statement

The vibrant red of my piece represents passion, energy, and the power of a creative life force. The red feathers of the female form were donated to me from the estate of a marvelous Chicago fiber artist. The head of the figure is represented by the small cage and the birds flying free.

The opportunity to act on creative thoughts, dreams, and fantasies have given us not only wonderful art, music, and literature, but all the other inventions now part of our daily life. These inventions include electricity, automobiles, telephones, computers, new medical treatments, space travel and so much more. There are no limits to what a freed creative mind and spirit can discover and produce.

I spent most of my life supporting and encouraging creativity in elementary schools and later adult art programs. Not having children of my own, I recently began wondering if I had really made any difference in any of the lives that have crossed my path. Then, I discovered a small wooden book in my studio. On it was written a date and the name of the school where I was the art teacher and counselor. It also said, “Mrs. Smyth Decorating Small Spaces of the Mind,” which was an affirmation I needed at that time and something I will always treasure.

Please pass forward the wisdom of wonderful young people and continue to “Decorate Small Spaces of the Mind,” keeping creativity alive with your family, friends, and acquaintances.
