Statement

“Birds of a feather flock together,” it’s a natural phenomenon, and like them “Women’s Journeys in Fiber” is a place where we have flocked together to create enduring relationships.

Like migrating birds, humans travel, spreading our “wings” to experience different environments. As women we find common bonds that unite us for the purpose of sharing our mutual love of the arts. “Birds of my imagination,” has helped me to “soar” to new heights.

The bird house was created from pieces of mahogany I selected and glued from the wood shop at the Sherwood Hotel in Tela, Honduras, under the guidance of my mentor Jose Santos Reyes Palma (El Sarco). While working in Honduras, my friend Julie Olson spared me time daily to accomplish this task.

My birds that have flocked together (quite a variety) have been created with different techniques. I used two bird patterns, a Terry Grant pattern and a Nellie Durand pattern for this project. I have found inspiration in cotton fabrics, sport-themed, painted and stamped, drapery samples, and repurposed antique reverse appliquéd pieces, as well as many colorful beads.
