Statement
My box is a metaphor representing the fantasies I have had about life underwater. The mermaids represent joyful playful friends. They would entice me to jump into the water and play. While I was creating my box and examining the depth of the cobalt blue water, fish and other elements, I so wanted to jump in. I often imagine that if I were able to swim, snorkel, scuba dive or spend more time beneath the surface of the water I know that the world would have opened up to me, and my life would have been richer. I have a fear of water. My fear comes from almost drowning at ten years old. That episode crippled me and has gotten in the way of many experiences throughout my life I felt like an outsider when I was at a pool or the beach. Never learning how to swim as a child makes it harder to learn when you are older. |
