Statement

My piece represents water as a treasure box shaped as Lake Michigan. Water is always close to my heart. Being close to water soothes my soul. I am the double fish water sign, a true Pisces: two fishes swimming in opposite directions and happiest near water.

Water is truly a treasure: a sacred commodity to be respected and not exploited. Please use our precious commodity wisely!

The piece is constructed in three layers. The Lake Michigan shape was cut from foam core and lined with wooden skewers for stability. Then this form was covered with Fosshape™ to provide a degree of firmness. The “Lake” shape is covered with silk fabric I hand dyed with indigo. The blues progress from dark to light using a shibori, or Japanese manual-resist dyeing technique. The fabric was stitched and beaded. The silk lining is shibori dyed in indigo and Kakishibu, a traditional Japanese paint made from persimmon tannin. The feet are Swarovski crystals.
