Family is Powerful. Time has many layers. The memories get frayed, but the essence of all that has gone before is there. I picked fabrics for this project that reminded me of each of the family members that I grew up with. The star and sea patterns in blue remind me of my dad who loved to sail, do watercolors, write poetry, and hold me in his arms at night to look at the stars together. My mom usually wore navy blue, but when I began to think of her colors I realized that she loved bright floral colors that referenced her love of gardening. In her creative needlepoint and knitting projects, she especially used oranges and yellows combined with aqua. My brother liked music, guitars and board games with friends. I’m not completely sure why, but for him, green patterns came to mind. The little pink floral material adds a little bit of myself in there too.

The piece presented some real challenges of how to provide structure into fabric without it seeming stiff. The entire piece is held together with hooks and eyes with ties to connect it to the rope holding it at the top. The rope is symbolic of my father’s love of sailing as I remember him sitting in the living room splicing ropes to get ready for his next adventure, his next journey. I owe my sense of adventure, my creativity, and my broad interests to all of them, my original family. This is my journey in fiber.
