My Piece represents my childhood fantasy of being able to fly. I loved watching the birds, their colors, the movement of their wings, the ease with which they travel through the clouds and sky above us. I envied their wonderful expanded view of the world and dreamed of freely floating amongst them.

I am the whimsical red felted bird sitting in a nest of felt and woven rubber that bounces up and down. The clock below represents times past as my youthful face peers out of it.

My favorite song was “Somewhere over the rainbow” and I practiced singing it like Judy Garland when no one was around. Bright colors express the excitement of it all to a young girl. So, as Langston Hughes suggests, “Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, Life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly.”
