My botanical inspiration is Georgia O’Keeffe’s “Poppy,” from a postcard that I have had since studying art in college. It has always been a favorite.

Having spent my life working in textiles and the last several years with fabric dyes, I took the leap! After photographing poppies in several gardens and dyeing samples in every shade of red available, I painted with thickened dyes on my very best silk fleece and dyed yards of silk charmeuse for the lining.

The real challenge, though, was to take a two-dimensional image of a three-dimensional object and draw it on a three-dimensional model of my garment. Next was to paint it on two-dimensional uncut cloth. Finally, I could then sew the three- dimensional coat. It is quilted using satin stitch.

My title is a tribute to Georgia O’Keeffe and Ray Charles.
