Statement

I have always been fascinated by arbors and trellises. Their delicate lattice work covered with grapes, roses, clematis and other flowering plants are, to me, visual works of art.

One arbor in particular stands out in my mind, and that is the one that covers the walkway outside the visitor’s center at the Chicago Botanic Garden. One needs only to look up to see one of the most majestic sights of all—the overhead arbor covered with flowers.

As the inspiration for this exhibit is something that blooms. I decided to create a wearable arbor. Sheer organza supports my arbor, which has lattice strips woven from crisscrossed satin ribbon. Delicate roses, violets and leaves, cut from fabrics, “climb” my lattice work. Small seed beads were added to the centers on many of the flowers for accent. At last, I have my own wearable rose arbor!
