Statement
When thinking about this project, I decided to challenge myself to use nontraditional and unfamiliar materials. I chose "gut," otherwise known as sausage casings or pig's intestine. I have been fascinated by gut since I had the opportunity to play with it while visiting a fellow artist and friend. It is very pliable and organic in its natural state, this made it an ideal material for the sculptural nature of this project. I spent many hours experimenting and making samples before deciding on this design. It was very freeing to work with unfamiliar materials. I worked with a sense that all ideas were possible since I had no prior knowledge of what was correct or appropriate. This was a real eye opener because we all tend to fall into habit with things that are familiar. This project gave me a fresh perspective on my work and why I do it. I hope to incorporate this material into future projects, traditional and nontraditional. |
