Statement
My purse is modeled on a traditional money bag. It uses the colors of a dollar bill: silver, green, black and white and the strings carry quotes about women’s growing economic power. Women in many countries and cultures are increasingly responsible for the “purse strings” in the family. Some examples are:

•American women control almost $4 trillion in annual consumer spending.

•58% of women baby boomers have less than $10,000 saved in a pension or 401K.

•Single women make up the second-largest group of home buyers.

•Women purchase nearly two out of every three cars, control 50% of U.S. wealth and take 50% of all business trips.

•Across Asia, 80% of household purchase decisions are made by women.

I hope viewers will enjoy this commentary on women’s changing role in the world.

Process

1.    Using polyester metallic fabric, batting and black lining material I stitched dollar signs over the entire surface to create background pattern.

2.    Inserted large grommets around the circumference of the bag through all layers.

3.    Found quotes about women and economics and figured out how to print them onto ribbon using a heat press. Made many because it was hard to line them up.

4.    Inserted the ribbons through the grommets, trying out various ways to make them readable. Decided on a pattern.

5.    Stiffened the ribbons so they would stand out from the bag and be readable.

6.    Inserted weight into bottom of the bag so it would have the heft of a one bag and sit upright.
