Statement
Usually my purse is the smallest, most innocuous bag I can find that will hold all the “essentials.” There are so many necessary cards, I count ten and only one a credit card. Then there’s glasses, keys, Kleenex, pen/pencil, note pad, lipstick and sweater, plus extra room. The idea of making a purse with nothing but a size restriction sounded wonderful. I could make a pocket for all the items usually carried in a purse. And most important, for one who wears black and white and shades in between, I could “get some color in my life.” My paintings are full of color—it’s been suggested that my color comes out through my hands. This project allowed me to incorporate some of the very colorful pockets collected during special occasions and travels. For my purse, I started with a basic black bag which seemed appropriate. Added to the outside, a small handwoven pocket done during my weaving days, eyeglass cases from Mexico, various foreign coins, Inca belts and many white buttons for accent. The sum of the parts makes a colorful collage of pockets in one big purse. |
