Statement
My ancestors are the inspiration for this piece. Anna and Tonnas Emanuelson left Norway and came to the United States in the late 1800’s. They settled in Morgan Park Illinois and had nine children; Emanuel, Ida, Victor, Rose, Thomas, Gertrude, Joseph, Julian and Mary. (Pictured here). The children became teachers and builders. I am one of thirty three grandchildren. The Nine Children and their parents are shown here. On the other side are pictures of handmade folk art including weaving, carved bowls and traditional rosemaling. (Norwegian Folk Art by Marion Nelson). Also pictured is the Medieval Stave church where my Great Grandmother Inger was baptized; as well as Anna at age 17 in her wedding dress. I was very close with my Grandmother. She told me stories of Norway and showed me swatches of silk and lace from her daughter’s dresses. The lives of these strong women were a great influence and piqued my interest in genealogy. I went to Norway and visited the family farm and churches. Presently I produce a quarterly family newsletter that goes out to one hundred and twenty families. |
