When the next WJIF project was to be an apron, my son Ken who works for NASA asked for a "Man" apron. I had a theme. He supplied the official NASA patch for my iridescent organza rocket with a US flag.

Ken has lamented the scarcity of the Chicago Hot Dog in Houston. A website about them provided images that inspired me. First, I made a bun by dyeing white felt to make it more "bun-like." Then I added black seed beads for poppy seeds. My local quilt store had the perfect fabric for the hot dog and the pickle. I squirted some mustard on a plate and photographed it for the shape of the yellow fabric squiggle. Small snippets of variegated green made relish, organdy bits became onion slices, red fabric colored with a marker made tomato slices. The inside of the green pickle was fashioned of ink-tinted pearly lentil beads with a layer of organdy over them. The pepper is a dyed version of the pickle fabric. The whole thing was flavored with celery salt-colored glitter. I constructed the pocket with a University of Illinois Block I to represent his two degrees from the U of I.

I had a blast making it!
